Differences between ISO 3183 PSL1 and PSL2

ISO 3183 defines two key specification levels for oil and gas pipelines: PSL1 and PSL2, which show significant differences in several key dimensions.

Specification level and performance requirements: PSL1 is set as a standard quality level, which meets the basic performance requirements of conventional pipeline construction and is relatively loose. PSL2 significantly improves the requirements on the basis of PSL1, covering strict standards in many aspects such as chemical composition, mechanical properties and notch toughness to ensure the stability of steel pipes under extreme working conditions.

Chemical composition and mechanical properties: PSL2 is more stringent in chemical composition control, aiming to improve the corrosion resistance and overall mechanical properties of steel pipes. In terms of mechanical properties, the tensile strength and impact toughness indicators of PSL2 exceed those of PSL1, especially in low-temperature impact tests, PSL2 steel pipes show higher energy absorption capacity, ensuring reliability in cold or extreme environments.

Nondestructive testing and additional inspections: PSL2 requires nondestructive testing of each steel pipe to eliminate internal defects, which is much higher than PSL1. In addition, PSL2 also adds the requirement of sandblasting on the pipe end to improve cleanliness and the firmness of subsequent connections, which are not available in PSL1.

Application areas and selection: Given its higher performance standards, PSL2 steel pipes are more suitable for pipeline projects under extreme conditions such as high pressure and high corrosion. On the contrary, PSL1 is more suitable for pipeline construction for conventional purposes. When purchasing, users need to clearly select PSL1 or PSL2 according to the specific needs and design specifications of the project to ensure that the performance of the steel pipe matches the project requirements.

In short, ISO 3183 PSL1 and PSL2 show different levels of performance requirements and inspection standards in many aspects. PSL2, with its higher specifications and strictness, provides reliable guarantee for oil and gas transportation under extreme conditions; while PSL1, with its economy and applicability, meets the needs of conventional pipeline construction.
