NM450 steel properties
NM450 steel is a high-strength, abrasion-resistant steel that is commonly used in applications requiring high wear resistance. The "NM" designation typically refers to "Niobium Microalloyed", and 450 refers to the Brinell hardness number (HB), which is 450, indicating the steel's hardness.
Key Properties of NM450 Steel:
1. Chemical Composition:
- Carbon (C): 0.20% – 0.30%
- Silicon (Si): 0.60% max
- Manganese (Mn): 1.50% – 2.00%
- Phosphorus (P): 0.025% max
- Sulfur (S): 0.025% max
- Chromium (Cr): 0.40% – 1.00%
- Niobium (Nb): 0.05% max
- Vanadium (V): 0.10% max
2. Mechanical Properties:
- Brinell Hardness: 450 HB (hardness typically 450 HB)
- Tensile Strength: 900–1100 MPa
- Yield Strength: ≥ 700 MPa
- Elongation: 12% min (for thickness ≤ 12mm)
- Impact Toughness: ≥ 27 J at -40°C (depending on thickness)
3. Physical Properties:
- Density: Approximately 7.85 g/cm³
- Modulus of Elasticity: 210 GPa
4. Weldability:
- NM450 is generally not easy to weld because of its high hardness, which can lead to cracking during welding. Pre-heating and post-weld heat treatment are often required to ensure quality and minimize stress.
5. Applications:
- Mining Equipment: Bucket teeth, dump truck beds, crushers, and other high-impact and abrasive wear parts.
- Construction Machinery: Chassis, excavator arms, and other heavy-duty applications where wear resistance is crucial.
- Agricultural Machinery: Parts exposed to abrasive soil and crop handling.
- Material Handling: Conveyor belts, hoppers, and silos where abrasion resistance is needed.

Comparison to Other Abrasion-Resistant Steels:
